FINAL COUNT IN WALLACE

MAJORITY OF 844 VOTES MR HAMILTON’S LEAD REDUCED The infrequency of mail contact with Milford Sound prevented the delivery of votes recorded at Milford in the General Election to the returning officer at Queenstown until last night. The final count reduced the original majority of the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) from 905 to 844. Mr Hamilton secured a majority of the postal votes, but his Labour opponent (Mr J. J. Lynch) gained a majority of 75 on the absentee votes. Of the postal votes, Mr Hamilton secured 86 and Mr Lynch 68. A total of 191 absentee votes went to Mr Hamilton and 266 to Mr Lynch.

The recount was completed at 11' o’clock last night, the result being:— E. B. Gordon (National) 5548 G. H. Ormond Wilson (Labour) 5237 Informal H 8 The preliminary Announcement on the night of October 15 gave Mr Gordon 5202 votes and Mr Wilson 4866, pie apparent majority for Mr Gordon being 336. The official declaration reduces this majority to 311. The postal, absentee and declaration votes were allocated, as follows:—Gordon, 96 postal, 240 absentee, 10 declaration; Wilson, 6 postal, 304 absentee, seven declaration. The number of absentee votes disallowed was 42 and there were 118 informal votes. The total number of votes registered was 10,945. HAMILTON C. A. Barrell (Labour) 7722 A. W.
