Mr W. Bell, of Woodlands, has been appointed by the Southland Education Board to fill the vacancy on the Gore High School Board caused by the death of Mr R. L. Byars.
Mr Alex Sutherland has been appointed judge of dancing events at the Waipukurau (Hawke’s Bay) Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show, which is to be held on January 23, 1939.
Mr Clive B. Sage, M.A., has been appointed to the staff of the Southland Technical College and he will take up his duties next February. At Victoria University College, Wellington, Mr Sage held the Lissie Rathbone ahd the James Macintosh Scholarships. Later he trained at the Auckland Training College, where he was students’ president, and at the Auckland University College, where he gained honours in English (first class) and French. During the last two years Mr Sage has been relieving on the staff of the Hawera Technical High School.
Mr H. L. Wilson, manager of the Calder Mackay Co., Ltd., Invercargill, will leave today for Christchurch, where he will spend several days. Mr W. Pattison, of Christchurch, managing director of the Pattison Ede Co., Ltd., has been on a visit to Invercargill, and left by the midday express yesterday. The resignation of Mr W. Grieve, as a member of the Southland Education Board was received with regret at the meeting of the board yesterday. The chairman (Mr S. Rice) said Mr Grieve’s services had been of great value to the board which-would be poorer by his resignation. A resolution of appreciation of Mr Grieve’s services was carried.
Mr W. L. G. McKenzie, chairman of the newly-formed Edendale branch of the Farmers’ Union, and Mr E. Malcolm, chairman of the new Heddon Bush; branch, were welcomed to the meeting of the Southland provincial executive by the president (Mr A. R. Johnston) yesterday. Mr R. L. Bowden, of Auckland, is at present on a business visit to Invercargill. , A motion of sympathy with Mr J. A. Miller in the death of his father was passed at a meeting of the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. Sympathy with Mr Joseph McKee, of Wendonside, in the death of his brother, Mr John McKee, was expressed at the meeting of the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday.
