TENNIS RACKET REPAIRS
To replace one or two broken strings in a tennis racket is not at all a difficult task. It may safely be attempted and satisfactorily accomplished by the average schoolboy, provided he has been instructed how to go about it. Before proceeding to restring a tennis racket, examine the: frame carefully to see that it is not broken anywhere; it is useless to restring a broken frame.
If the frame is sound, first tighten up the strings on, each side of the broken one. As each one is drawn tight it can be kept in this position by stopping it with an awl as shown at A—the broken end being brought through to the outside. Take a ■ length of gut sufficient for the new string or strings, and lace one end ■ through the hole, next to the broken string and beginning from the inside of the racket. Now pass the new end back through the same hole to form a lo6p, through which th p broken end of the old tring is passed as shown at B. A firm pressure on the new string will
draw this loop with the old string into the hole and at the same time hold the, old string tight. Fig. C shows how the point appears in the centre of the hole. The method of fastening off the ends of the strings' is also shown.
When one end is securely joined it remains to weave the new string or strings into their proper place, draw them up tight and join to the other end of the old string. This joint is made in the reverse way from the first joint. The end of the
old string is put .through from the outside and back again through the same hole so as to form the loop through which the new string is passed, as shown at D. The old string is now drawn tight from the outside. This pulls the loop with the new string into a central position in the hole as shown at C, when both ends are fastened off as before. The loons on the outside of D and the inside of B are to illustrate the method of fastening off, and are not nut in until the joint has been drawn in tight.
If these directions are followed carefully the racket will be sound and strong again.
