• your P oem should set the metfe for the others Cousin Mona, but if you divide your verses into bars you will find that very few lines have the correct metre. THE SNOW The snow was gently falling Down on to the ground; And the jolly little snowflakes Danced round, and round, and round. And when at last the snow had stopped, And out came the sun, We all went on to the lawn, And had the greatest fun. —2 marks to Cousin Mona Thompson (13), Devereux Road, Winton. Your poetry has improved this year, Cousin Pat, and you are more sure of metre ana rhyme. Try a more difficult pattern next time. LILAC Lilac’s out in flower, again, v Oh; so lovely and so sweet. In the sunshine after rain, Now Spring’s glory is complete. Flying near the lilac tree, Breathing deep the perfumed air, Is the blackbird wild and free; And the honey bees are there. From my garden, I send you Fragrant sprays of lilac bloom, Bright with sunshine, drenched with dew. Sprays of lilac for your room. —3 marks to Cousin Pat Henderson (14), Waikana, Gore R.D. This is very good for a first attempt my cousin. You have used two types of metre, and of the two I think the ope used in the last verse is the better. See if you can change the first verse to that metre. For mstance, the first lines could be “Oh, Spring is here! Oh, Spring is here! For Spring is the best season of the year.” SPRING “Spring is here! Spring is here! Spring is the best season of the year,” I love to see, the lambs skip about, As we laugh, rim and shout And sing, “Summer is here! Summer is here!” The catkins come out on the willows, Goose-feathers are fine for our pillows, The birds build their nests, The weary horse rests, And the boats ride aloft on the billows. —3 marks to Cousin Hugh Murray Orr (11), Balfour, Glenure R.D. : 'x -
