Skim milk is very nearly a balanced food for pigs, and if salt, charcoal and some oil are added the animals require nothing more than green food to keep them in perfect health and growth. Where skim milk is not available and cereal meals and roots are fed, bone and blood meal should be added to raise the protein, calcium and phosphate content of the ration. Salt should always be fed sparingly to pigs. Though they require a small amount they are very liable to salt poisoning should too much be included in their ration.
Pigs kept in good condition through liberal feeding of a balanced diet rich in minerals will have a high resist- ' ance to disease. This means that they will throw off worm infestation and other ills that seriously retard growth or cause the death of less well-fed animals.
