ANGLING CLUB OPENING COMPETITION The first competition for the season was held by the Mataura Angling Club and drew a splendid entry. Conditions were favourable for fishing, especially on the Wyndham and Mimihau steams, and most of the entrants were successful in grassing good baskets, the catches totalling 186 fish and weighing 1691 b 14oz. During the weigh-in in the band room there was an exhibition of the fish which attracted much interest. W Duthie won the open contest with 29 fish, 171 b 7oz, plus 150 p.c., 431 b 9oz, and the novice prize went to W. A. Bromby, with 11 fish, 141 b 7oz. RIFLE SHOOTING The official. opening of the Mataura Defence Rifle Club took place in good weather. There was a good attendance of members and visitors, in spite of numerous counter attractions The occasion was marked with a single day shoot over ranges of . 300, 500 and 600 yards, and scoring was slightly low because of mirage, the best net scores being 135 by J. A. Munro and 134 by W. T. Webb. The championship series will start next week. A trophy for the day’s shoot went to T. Gaudion, with a gross 139.
