QUEENSTOWN

WAKATIPU RIFLE CLUB E. J. LOWEN’S SUCCESS At the opening shoot of the Wakatipu Rifle Club there was a good attendance, including a team from the Arrowtown Club. The president, Mr H. McKenzie, of Dipton, was present and received a warm welcome. Messrs Mackenzie ana Sons gave the money prizes and the trophies won last year were presented tc the winners by the president. Following are the scores: —

The first six were prize-winners. The following were the winners of the sweepstake: W. James 1, R. N. Grant 2, J. T. Toll 3, E. Lawrence 4, W. S. Reid 5. E. J. Lowen won the Simson button.

BOWLING TOURNAMENT A progressive doubles tournament was held by the Queenstown Bowling Club on Labour Day. The tournament, which was organized by Messrs E. V. Scandrett and W. Nelson, was most successful, a number of visiting bowlers, with club members, taking part. Three rounds were played in the morning ana two in the afternoon, as the Southland players were anxious to reach home that evening. . i Scandrett (Queenstown) was the only skip with five wins and Murray Davidson (Queenstown) the only lead with five wins. , W. Stewart (Southland Club) and_A. J. Geddes (Invercargill Club) tied for second place in the skips .and in e draw Stewart was the winner. The second place for leads, resulted in a tie, T. Davidson and J. W. Miller, of the Queenstown Club, and H. Lee, of the Invercargill Club, being equal. In the draw Lee was the winner. Visiting bowlers included A. E. Broad, L. Gray, G. Baxter and A. Wilson, of the Waihopai Club, A. J. Geddes and H. Lee, of the Invercargill Club, S. McDougall, of the Te Rangi Club, and E. C. Smith, of the Gore Club. A prominent Invercargill player expressed the opinion that the Labour Day tournament filled a gap and said he was of the opinion that it would become a very popular fixture from now on. Following are the detailed results: First round.—Geddes 7 beat Baxter 2, Scandrett 9 beat Nelson 4; Manson 8, beat Wilson 7; Stewart 7 beat Broad 2; McDougall 5 beat Gray 4. Second round.—Geddes 10 beat Gray 8; Scandrett 11 beat Wilson 4; Nelson 9 beat McDougall 8; Broad 11 beat Manson 6; Stewart 10 beat Baxter 9. Third round.—Broad 12 beat Baxter 4; Scandrett 7 beat Manson 6; Nelson 9 beat Wilson 8; McDougall 10 beat Geddes 9; Stewart 9 drew with Gray 9. Fourth round.—Geddes 12 beat Manson 5; Scandrett 16 beat Baxter 6; Stewart 7 drew with Broad 7; McDougall 9 beat Nelson 7; Gray 9 beat Wilson 6 Fifth round.—Geddes 6 beat Nelson 3; Scandrett 10 beat Broad 8; Gray 12 beat Stewart 9; Manstn 8 drew with McDougall 8; Baxter 13 drew with Wilson 13. First prizes in the tournament were won by E. V. Scandrett (skip), five wins, and M. Davidson (lead), five wins Geddes and Stewart tied for second place in the skips and J. W. Miller, Schieb and H. Lee for second in the leads.
