Night Trotting The outstanding success of night trotting at Perth and at Adelaide has made such an impression in Victoria and New South Wales that the officials of the Royal Show at Melbourne have decided to give it a trial. A rich programme of events has attracted the. best pacers and trotters in the • Commonwealth and the contests bear an inter-Dominion championship flavour. AU the ■ star performers, including Lawn Derby, will compete. Holding trotting (races at night under powerful electric lights has permitted the sport; to make rapid development wherever it has been tried in the Commonwealth. Not many years ago trotting men were forced to race for whips and bridles at Adelaide, but once the Government legalized the sport to be held at night, it .became tremendously popular, and the attendances now are never below 20,000. In view of the success of holding trotting meetings at night in Australia, it would be interesting to see what support night trotting would re- ; ceivej in .New Zealand.' Already good progress has been 'made in connection with a proposal to hold races at night at Monica Park, Woolston. Several trotting trainers have inspected the track and provided it is banked they are ■satisfied that it will .be safe to race on, and a committee-from the Canterbury Owners’.and Breeders’ Association/' . jfo-operating .with the .officials an phargd, of -Monies Park, with-a“view,' to -trying' but trotting at night under ’ electric light during the-summer in Christchurch.
