An interesting test to ascertain whether a certain type of lampshade was a fire hazard was carried out in H. and J. Smith’s store yesterday. The shade used, one made of synthetic parchment, was placed on an electric lamp, and after 10 minutes of “roasting” it reacted to the heat but did not ignite. The test was a severe one, the shade being placed so that the parchment rested on the glass of the lamp. Lamps of varying strengths were used but the result was the same. The superintendent of the Invercargill fire brigade, Mr F. S. Simpson, who was present, said that the particular type of shade used in the test was not a fire hazard. Celluloid lampshades were a fire hazard, however, and were prohibited from use.
