TECHNICAL COLLEGE

BOARD OF MANAGERS MEETS “Only three weeks now remain until the end of the evening school session, v which finishes on Saturday, November 19,” stated the report of the principal of the Southland Technical College (Mr C. A. Stewart) presented to the monthly meeting of the Board of Managers last night. “My next report will summarize the work of the year which has shown quite a remarkable growth in several directions. We have had more students than previously from Bluff and intermediate stations, and a more convenient transport service would mean a still greater increase. As yet, however, I have no definite proposal to offer for securing such a service. The main difficulty, of course, is that the Bluff students are distributed over a good many classes, meeting on different evenings of the week. I think there can be little doubt that, within a comparatively few years, improved road or air transport will bring our equipment and special facilities within the reach of young people from such outlying districts as Bluff, Winton and Riverton. Even under present conditions, I believe that we might well conduct a series of Saturday morning classes for such students. Theory work might be taken in their own centres or by correspondence, and the practical work taken in our buildings on the Saturday. There can be little doubt that the Education Department’s intentions are now so progressive as to countenance and even encourage such a modification'of regulation requirements. “During the month the boys of the Rural Industrial Course visited the horse parade and were given a fine demonstration of judging by Mr David Caldwell. For the arrangements we are again indebted to Mr A. L. Adamson. The same boys last week visited the farm of Mr J. J. Blakie, Ryal Bush, where a varied and interesting demonstration covered Ayrshire breeding, pasture management and poultry raising. “During the month of November we expect to be visited by the new superintendent of Technical Education (Mr F. C. Renyard) and possibly one or more of his inspectors. Next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, our annual entertainment will be held in the school hall. The following week we hope to have our annual athletic sports, and within the next few weeks we must have final examinations and swimming sports, to be followed by the annual exhibition of work.” There were present Messrs J. H. Reed (chairman), W. Grieve, W.'Carswell, J. Weir, S. Anderson, L. Holmes and Miss C. McLeod.
