WELLINGTON WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MISS BELL BEATS MISS FLEMING IN FINAL (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 27. A new woman golfer came into the front rank today when Miss Patsy Bell, the 20-year-old Wanganui player, won the Wellington women’s provincial championship on the Heretaunga links by defeating Mrs D. A. Crombie (Wellington) by 2 and 1 in a semi-final and going on in the afternoon in heavy rain to take the championship by defeating the experienced Miss Valmai Fleming (Christchurch) by 4 and 2 in the final. Miss Bell learned her golf with the Seafield Club (Wanganui) and came into prominence last week by taking Miss J. Horwell (Timaru) to the twentieth green in the third round of the New Zealand women’s championship at New Plymouth. Driving a long ball and keeping good direction with woods and irons, the Wanganui girl is very sound in her short play. Her greatest strength, however, lies in her deadly putting. In this department deliberation pays her, as she rarely misses anything up to six feet. It was an outstanding performance to beat three New Zealand representatives, Miss Horwell, Mrs Crombie and Miss Fleming, in succession, to take the title. In a semi-final Miss Fleming beat Miss H. Buchanan by 3 and 2. Miss Fleming and Miss Buchanan had a good fight going out. The former was 2 up at the second, but the match was square at the fifth. She was 2 up again, but lost the ninth, which her opponent took with a fine 2. Miss Fleming was out in 40 and Miss Buchanan in 41. Miss Buchanan reduced her opponent’s lead of two holes by splendid play at the twelfth, but it went back to two at the next, which she played badly. This actually was her Waterloo, though she got two more halves. Mrs Crombie had a lead of one hole on Miss Bell at the turn after even going, but after that she paid many visits to bunkers and was beaten by good approaching and putting in the final stages.
