GOVERNMENT AID TO BE CONSIDERED FACTORS OUTLINED BY MR SAVAGE (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 26. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) announced today that the question of Government assistance for the .Bluff-Melbourne-Wellington shipping service would have to be considered shortly. " Some reports on the matter had been prepared, but no finality had. been reached. A good deal of money for a subsidy to maintain the service was necessary, said Mr Savage. It was no use having fifth-rate accommodation—he was not saying there was such accommodation, but he was merely saying this by way of illustration—in such a service if they had first-class accommodation between Wellington and Sydney, or Auckland and Sydney. Such factors brought the financial aspect to the forefront. The trans-Tasman air service came into the question. He considered flying would be the chief means of transport in the future and there was no point in legislating only for the immediate future. The whole proposal would have to be discussed on its merits and it was not such a simple thing as some people imagined. “We don’t'want to spend a large sum of money establishing a service that will be obsolete a short time after,” said the Prime Minister.
