AMERICAN SURPLUS PRODUCE PLAN
RESALE TO NEEDY AT LOW PRICES (Received October 26, 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 25. The Government has received early support for its surplus produce plan, for which it has allocated 10,000,000 dollars. The citrus industry has accepted the Government's offer to buy 3,000,000 cases of" high-quality oranges at the market price for resale at low rates to the needy, on condition that the industry withdraws 3,000,000 cases of lowquality oranges from the _ market. Grapefruit growers are considering a similar deal.
The Secretary for Agriculture (Mr H. A. Wallace) contends that the plan is preferable to export subsidies. He says: “Some people want to sell to foreigners our surplus produce cheaply. Is it not better to give our people this benefit of bargain prices?”
