The popularity of the island as a holiday resort is increasing every year and a busy seakin is expected. The season for tourists generally begins fa November and continues till about March, although Stewart Island attracts holiday-makers at all times of the year because of the mildness of its climate. There are several tourists there at present and hostel proprietors report heavy advance bookings for the Christmas vacation.

Of the four hostels situated at Half Moon Bay, two, Woodslea House and Oban House, remain open throughout the year. Hie others close during the winter months. Ferndale House is open to receive guests and at Greenvale House preparations are being made for the tourist season. The hostel is expected to reopen very soon.
