SECOND DAY AT WINGATUI

STRONG SPRINT FIELD Araboa A Likely Newcomer FIRST DAY’S FORM AS GUIDE . (From Our Special Reporter) DUNEDIN, October 7. Light rain fell in Dunedin this afternoon and while the prospects for the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow do not look bright at present, there is every chance of the weather clearing. The track will be all the better for the few showers that have fallen so far and it will take a good amount of rain to affect it at all, as it was very firm yesterday. The fields for tomorrow are not as strong as they were yesterday, a good number of horses having dropped out. The Dunedin Guineas, for three-year-olds, will attract most interest.

Mount Vai has been raised 121 b and Grand Finale, who was second to him, has gone up 51b in the Waikari Hurdles. Grand Finale is meeting Mount Vai on. 71b worse terms, but the latter should win again, as he had a lot to spare in his first day’s success. The others are not a good lot and Song Boy should easily prove the best of them. Attractive Note and Vallock are two likely to show up in the Novice Handicap. The former was a good second to Withdrawal and finished on full of running. Vallock was well supported the first day and finished fourth after being hopelessly placed at the home turn. Dennis Dowling is a likely improver and Colonel Rouge will be all the better for his first day’s race. Our Pal was solidly backed yesterday and after being prominent most of ihe way did not stay on. Doubleack is the most likely of the others.

SHOULD WIN AGAIN The manner in which Passaform finished on at the end of a mile suggests that he will see out ten furlongs and ahalf in the Claredon Handicap better than most. He is handily placed and is almost certain to be favourite. Cintilla will have to be considered on yesterday’s running and Rousseau will only have to have the sting out of the ground to improve. Passaform and Cintilla are both likely to be preferred ahead of Ardchojlie. Sparkle has better credentials than most over the journey, but to have any chance she will have to improve greatly on y’esterday’s running. The Ranfurly Handicap is one of the most open of the day. Alma will fare much better over a mile, but it is difficult to see how she will see out a hard finish after the way she stopped yesterday. Monipere is a newcomer and won well at the Otago Hunt meeting. Last Refrain meets Milford on 31b worse terms and at this difference Milford should beat him as the latter will have an apprentice allowance. Milford has only strip as well as he did yesterday to be the hardest to beat. Petersham has won in his last three starts and is well up to this company. High Glee is the most likely of the others and he is one capable of running out a solid mile.

On yesterday’s form King Gustavo and Dark Flight will dominate the betting in the Dominion Handicap, as Winning Rival is missing from the two-year-old field. Dark Flight may be expected to improve more than King Gustavo and he may have the edge on the latter. Brandon did not show up yesterday, but he is more useful than this form would make out. Blissful Lady is the most likely of the others. ARABOA A NEWCOMER Moneyless Is meeting Silver Streak on 61b better terms in the Telegraph Handicap, but this should not trouble Silver Streak, who won brilliantly on Thursday. Araboa is a newcomer whose form is good enough to say that he will play a big part in the finish. Valantua will run a useful seven furlongs, and of the others Viking may show up. Janet Gaynor is always capable of upsetting calculations. Kilrobe was unlucky when she was beaten into third place in the Taioma Handicap and she is the logical choice for the Kaikorai Handicap. Her form in this race stands out Astaire did not race yesterday and when right is decidedly useful. Half and Half is another newcomer and if he races up to his National week form he will be in the picture. He is a solid customer. Straightdel was confidently supported yesterday and beat all but Lord Nuffield, a four-year-old of good class. Auctor is another who was not produced the first day. He was a winner at Geraldine and rarely runs a bad race. It has been decided to run the Claredon Handicap as the third race and the Kaikorai Handicap as the last race, and the win-and-place system of betting will operate. The following are in form: 12.45 WAIKARI HURDLES: Mount Vai, Grand Finale. 1.23 ‘novice HANDICAP: Vallock, Attractive Note, Colonel Rouge. 2.1 CLAREDON HANDICAP: Passaform, Cintilla. 2.39 ‘rANFURLY HANDICAP: Petersham, Milford, Last Refrain. 3.17 ‘DUNEDIN GUINEAS: Defaulter, Dunstan. 3.55 DOMINION HANDICAP: Dark Flight, King Gustavo, Blissful Lady. 4.33 TELEGRAPH HANDICAP: Araboa, , Silver Streak, Moneyless. 5.11 KAIKORAI HANDICAP: Kilrobe, Auctor, Half and Half. ' , ACCEPTANCES FOR TODAY WAKARI HURDLES HANDICAP, £l5O.

ONE HORSE RACE LIKELY DEFAULTER’S CHANCE IN GUINEAS CREDENTIALS SECOND TO NONE (From Our Special Reporter) DUNEDIN, October 7. The Dunedin Guineas, the star event of tomorrow’s card of the spring meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club, has drawn a field of only five juveniles, four of which were produced yesterday. The Paper Money filly, Withdrawal, was the only Guineas candidate to be returned a winner yesterday and Defaulter was placed. • Withdrawal, who won the Inal Stakes, hung on well in a close finish after making all the pace, but she does not give the impression of one likely to run out a solid mile. She is not the best behaved at the barrier and yesterday she held up the novice field for quite a time. There is no questionmg her speed, but she may not carry it far enough. Defaulter is expected to make a onehorse race of the Guineas, and if two-year-old form is any guide he certainly should. Little notice can be taken of his defeat over six furlongs yesterday, as that race will be all to his advantage. He may be expected to

run out a much better mile and on form is plainly a class' above the field he is. to meet. He will be ridden by G. Humphries, who won the McLean Stakes on Winning Rival. Dunstan was not produced yesterday, but he has done a good amount of recent racing. The mile journey will suit; him better than most and he is the one likely to cause the favourite most concern. One of Dunstan’s best recent efforts was at Ashburton when he was beaten by half-a-length by Made Money, with Petersham in third place over one and a-quarter miles in 2min. 7 2-ssec.

Toro Koura contested the Taioma Handicap yesterday, but did not threaten danger at any stage. ■ Density was included in the same field, but the Pink Coat filly failed badly when heavily supported. Density failed to see out a solidly-run seven furlongs and on this form would have little chance of running out a mile. It was reported this afternoon that it was extremely unlikely that Density would contest the Guineas.

Defaulter’s credentials are second to none and Dunstan is the only one likely to make a race of it with him. STAKES INCREASED BY £lOO GORE TROTTING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING At a meeting of the committee of the Gore Trotting Club the programme for the club’s annual meeting was approved. The total stakes have been increased by £lOO, which includes additional prize-money in each event. _ It was also decided that the Pigeon Memorial event be altered from a mile and a-quarter race (class 2min 59sec) to a mile and a-half event (class 3min 36sec).

Those present at the meeting were: Messrs G. Lindsay (president). J. F. Grant, D. F. Tait, D. Windle. W. L. Scott, W. R. Jones, G. J. Williamson, J. Brown and T. A. Fleming. The following officials were appointed:—Judge, Mr J. F. Grant; judge’s steward, Mr T. A. Fleming; handicapper, Mr H. A. Pierce; honorary clerk of the scales, Mr J. l Reid; honorary clerk of the totalizator, Mr D. F. Tait; honorary clerk of course and birdcage steward, Mr John Brown; honorary assistant to birdcage steward, Mr F. Young; starter, Mr W. R. Jones; assistant starter, Mr F. Messrs Lindsay, Grant, Windle and Fleming.
