GERMAN DEMAND FOR COLONIES

South-West African Nazis Confident TANGANYIKA’S APPEAL TO BRITAIN (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 7, 10.20 pan.) JOHANNESBURG, October 7. The Czech crisis has revived the question of Germany’s former colonies. Many Germans in South-West Africa openly declare that Germany will regain the colony, though the vast majority of the natives is opposed t'o Nazi rule. Trade and business are at a standstill because it is feared that there will be an expression of German ambition towards Tanganyika. All sections of the community have sent a joint cable message to the East African Board in London requesting reassurances .of British pledges to safeguard their interests as part of the Empire.. Urgent appeals have also been addressed to Delhi and South Africa. Tanganyika, with a population of 5,000,000, was formerly German East Africa. The capital is Dar-es-Salaam. It was reported that colonies were mentioned by Herr Hitler at the four-Power conference at Munich a week ago last Thursday, and immediately after the talks the colonial cry was raised again by some of the German State-controlled newspapers. Allegations that Germans in the former German colony of Tanganyika, now under British mandate, gave a mass Nazi salute when the British anthem. “God Save the King” was played on King George VTb official birthday, June 9, were brought before the House of Commons recently, j Colonel John Sandeman Allen, Conservative member, gave notice that he would ask the Colonial Secretary (Mr Malcolm MacDonald) what he had done to "deal with this breach of law.” Colonel Sandeman Allen declared the Nazi leader at Moshi, Tanganyika, appeared during the celebrations wearing “a brown shirt, brown riding breeches, top boots, helmet, and tie pin bearing the words •National Soztallstische Deutsche Arbeiter ParteV (National Socialist German Workers’ Party) surrounding a swastika, and together with all other Germans present gave the Nazi salute when the National Anthem was played.” The inscription is that of the official Nazi Party in Germany.
