BUTTER STOCKS IN LONDON
» STILL ABOVE LAST YEAR I ’ Stocks of butter in cold storage in ’ Great Britain declined heavily in the > latter part of August, when arrivals • from the Southern Hemisphere were ' very small. On August 27 the excess I over last year’s corresponding figures, ■ which in the middle of the month had reached the equivalent of 445,000 ■ boxes, was reduced to 345,000 boxes, ’ stated a London writer on September 5. ’ Arrivals of butter from Australia and f New Zealand were exceptionally light ’ during August, the total of 389,100 boxes comparing with 697,400 boxes in the preceding month and 564,700 boxes : in August 1937. Prospective arrivals from these sources for September show an increase to 573,500 boxes, as against 453,100 boxes a year ago, but arrivals ’ in October may be little different from last year’s corresponding figures. Nearly. 15,000 boxes of Argentine butter were received during August, as against nil in the same month last year. Further quantities are still being shipped, but the production outlook, which until recently had been very promising, now appears rather less favourable. During the fortnight ended August 27 there was a decline of 119,400 boxes in stocks of butter in cold storage in Great Britain, as compared with a decrease of 19,600 boxes during the corresponding period in 1937. During the four weeks ended August 27 the net out-of-storage movement was equal to 70,800 boxes, as against a net into- ; storage movement of' 260,300 boxes in the preceding month and a decline of 32,600 boxes in the corresponding period a year ago. Total stocks remaining in cold storage at August 27 were above the total for the corresponding date in 1937 by 345,300 boxes.
