The department will communicate with the local organizations concerned with a view to having everything in readiness and. a dental nurse, should be available in April next year.” This information was received yesterday by Mr W. Licensing Legislation Letters from six Chambers ,of Commerce in New Zealand about the licensing legislation were received at a meeting of the Southland Progress League last night “I think we. should take these letters as read,” said the chairman for the meeting, Dr J. A. Pottinger. “We have had enough about this subject.”

Nominations for Mayoralty So far only one nomination, that of Mr J. R. Hanan, has been received for the office of Mayor of Invercargill. Nominations close at noon today, and unless another candidate is forthcoming Mr Hanan will be returned unopposed. His appointment to the Mayoralty would, however, leave a vacancy on the City Council, and. except in the event of only ,one .candidate offering’ for that vacancy an election would be necessary. Mail For Australia ' Twenty bags of mail for .Australia will be carried by . tbe' WaitakiJ which is to sail this morning from Bluff for Melbourne. Public Lands “It is an interesting fact that although New Zealand is a young country and was planned with ■ considerable foresight the public lands in the Dominion do not compare with those in England.” This opinion was expressed at a meeting of the Southland Progress League last night by the chairman, Dr J. A. Pottinger. A Compliment to Southland The very thorough scheme of training for motor engineering apprentices evolved in the Southland-’' Technical College in the last year or two has attracted much attention from northern -entres and from the New Zealand Garage Proprietors’ Association. At th*, annual conference of the association, which was opened in Auckland on . September 21, the scheme was officially approved for general adoption throughout the Dominion, and an apprenticeship training committee, with Mr W. Grieve as chairman, was set up to coordinate a syllabus suitable for all training centres. The authorities of the Southland Technical College attribute the success of the local scheme to three main factors: The active and hearty support of the motor traders (especially their apprenticeship committee), sound organizing by the full-time engineering staff at the college, and the keen co-operation of part-time instructors engaged from the trade.
