SOUTH INVERCARGILL BOROUGH COUNCIL

NOMINATION FOR VACANCY ON HOSPITAL BOARD

At the meeting of the South Invercargill Borough Council last evening it was decided that the, council should nominate: the Mayor, Mr Owen Smith, as the Invercargill City and South Invercargill Borough representative on the Southland Hospital Board. A letter was received from the board informing the council that the death of the Mayor of Invercargill (Mr John Miller) had caused the vacancy on the board and the members were unanimous in nominating Mr Smith. Mr Smith referred to the death of Mr Miller, saying that Mr Miller had been an asset to the city and that his death was keenly regretted. The members of the council stood in silence as a mark of. respect. The monthly report of the foreman (Mr J. A. McMillan) was presented at the meeting and it stated that ditch cleaning on Maher, Scott, Moulson, Chesney, Ayling, Stirratt and Bain streets had been carried out and that surfacing had been done ,on Avon, Tramway, Kew and Elies roads and also on Bain and McQuarrie streets. Formation and widening work on several streets was also being done. The report of the inspector of nuisances (Mr W.B. Lay) was also read. It stated that, because of the shortage of feed, a few persons were making use of the roads, but straying of stock was 'infrequent. The report suggested that, in order to clear off noxious weeds, the council advertise giving ratepayers a month to eradicate noxious weeds from the streets and roads otherwise the council would clear off the weeds at the ratepayers’ expense. The financial statement was adopted. It was decided to give £5 to the Southland Progress League and it was also decided to write to the Education Department about the outfall of the Clifton channel.

There were present at the meeting: The Mayor and W. Richards, O. Paton, V. Edge and G. Smith.
