SOUTHLAND COURT AT EXHIBITION
BLUFF BOROUGH COUNCIL DEFERS ACTION
The question of assisting in the establishment of the Southland provincial court at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940 was again discussed by the Bluff Borough Council last night. -No definite action was taken, however. A motion that the council give £5O, to be spread over a period of two years, was lost, and an amendment that the question be referred to the Finance Committee was carried. Not all the councillors were in favour of contributing to the court. “I think we should give the project some support,” said the Mayor (Mr John Cameron). “We don’t want Southland to take a back seat at the exhibition and it is fair that we should give this scheme any possible assistance. We could give £4O or £5O, which could be distributed over two years.” Cr A. E. Budd moved that the council give £5O to the project, the amount to be spread over a period of two years. The motion was seconded by Cr O. F. Metzger. “The people of Bluff would rather have streets and footpaths than contribute to the scheme,” said Cr J. Ballantyne, who moved as an amendment that the council make no contribution. The amendment was ruled out of order by the Mayor, who said it was a direct negative. “I am mot in favour of this council making a contribution, and intend to vote against it,” said Cr Ballantyne. He then moved as an amendment that the matter be held over until the next meeting of the Finance Committee. Cr T. Muir seconded the amendment, which was carried on a show of hands by six votes to three.
