WAIMAHAKA RESIDENT BIDDEN FAREWELL

A public farewell was given in the Waimahaka hall to Mr and Mrs L. L. Macintosh and Miss Avril Macintosh who have left the district to live in Invercargill, where Mr Macintosh has been transferred to a position in the railway goods branch. There was a big attendance of residents of Waimahaka and surrounding districts.

The evening was spent in dancing, the music for which was supplied by Messrs J. Templeton, L. Orlowski and A. Crighton. In making the presentation to the guests Mr J. A. Stirling, sen., referred to the efficiency of Mr Macintosh in his duties as stationmaster and postmaster during the seven years he had been in the district. He had always been approachable and courteous. The chairman paid a tribute to the boys for the way in which they had furthered themselves in life and secured good positions for themselves in the Civil Service. He said they very much regretted the ill-health of Mrs Macintosh and trusted the change to Invercargill would benefit her considerably. However, she had found time to give to the work of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union and the Horticultural Society. The chairman then presented Mr and Mrs Macintosh with a crystal salad bowl and a chiming clock, and Miss Avril Macintosh with a cup, saucer and plate on behalf of the railway staff and the residents of Waimahaka and the surrounding districts. Mr G. R. Kennedy referred to Mr Macintosh’s arduous duty as registrar of births, deaths and marriages. Mr Gallagher spoke on behalf of the railway and postal staffs. Mr J. Robson wished the guest the best of health and prosperity on be-

half of the Tokonui railway and postal staffs.

In his reply Mr Macintosh thanked the farmers and the public for their hearty co-operation in all his work, and the speakers for their remarks. On behalf of Mrs Macintosh, his daughter and himself, he thanked them for their presents. On behalf of the Women’s Division, Mrs D. C. Livingstone presented Mrs Macintosh with a pottery ornament and thanked her for her good work in the Women’s Division.
