WINTER SPORTS AT HERMITAGE

SUCCESS OF SOUTHLAND SKI CLUB (United Press Association) THE HERMITAGE, August 27. A record crowd of skiers from all parts of New Zealand and from overseas are assembled at the Ball Hut to participate in the ski championships being held on the Ball Glacier. The Mount Cook ski championships were concluded on Saturday, and the New Zealand ski championship meeting will begin today. For the past week there has been bright sunshine. The weather and snow conditions are excellent. His Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Galway), accompanied by her Excellency, Lady Galway, and party, paid a visit to the Ball Hut on Friday and witnessed an exhibition of ski running and ski jumping on the Ball Glacier. Following are the results of the Mount Cook ski championships: DOWNHILL NOVICE, men.—D. Tatton (Southland Ski Club) 1, Murphy (Aorangi Ski Club) 2, A. Gabb (Southland Ski Club) 3. DOWNHILL NO VICE, women.—Miss E. Forsyth (Dunedin) 1, Miss M. Scott (Timaru) 2, Miss J. Spence-Sales (Dunedin) 3. DOWNHILL OPEN, men—R. Mackenzie (Tasman Ski Club) 1, H. Carter (Ruapehu Ski Club) 2, R. Wigley (Aorangi Ski Club) 3. DOWNHILL OPEN, women.—Mrs G. Kahn (Wellington) 1, Mrs H. Ely (Sydney) 2. NOVICE SLALOM, women.—Miss. J. Spence-Sales (Dunedin) 1.7 3-5,1, Miss W. Crosbie (Southland) 1.34 1-5, 2, Miss E. Forsyth (Dunedin) 1.37 3-5, 3. NOVICE SLALOM, men.—D. Tatton (Southland. Ski Club) 1.7 2-5, 1, A. In the inter-club championships, the Southland Ski Club secured highest points, with Tasman second, Aorangi third and Ruapehu fourth.
