DEATH OF COUNTY ENGINEER
APPRECIATION OF WORK OF MR G. L. CUTHBERTSON
The death of Mr George L. Cuthbertson (county engineer) was referred to at the Waitaki County Council meeting on Friday by the chairman (Mr James Rodman). He said it was difficult to control one’s feelings and thoughts, but the news of Mr Cuthbertson’s death had been heard with deep regret, not only by members of the council, but also by the administrative and outside staff, and by the residents of the county. Mr Cuthbertson, Mr Rodman said, was the third engineer engaged by the council, and he had known him ever since he had come to Oamaru. He felt they had lost a very capable and a very worthy officer, and a man who knew his job as engineer _ and surveyor. He had done very faithful and very fine work for the ratepayers. After the funeral, Mr Rodman continued, the members of the outside staff had met him, and expressed the wish that if anything were/to be done by way of a memorial, they would like to be included. It had been suggested that a tablet should be erected to Mr Cuthbertson’s memory on the new concrete bridge at Enfield, which was his last completed job. Councillors stood in silence as a tribute to his memory, and in sympathy with Mrs Cuthbertson and family. It was agreed that a memorial tablet should be erected as had been suggested. It was decided to record a minute of appreciation of the faithful service given by Mr Cuthbertson to the ratepayers over so many years, and the offer of the outside staff to be associated with the memorial was accepted.
