AUSTRALIA OUT FOR 336

BROWN BATS WELL AGAINST SUSSEX

BADCOCK AND McCABE NOT IN FORM

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received August 28, 7.40 p.m.) LONDON, August 27.

Fine stands by A. L. Hassett and W. A. Brown were features of the match between Sussex and Australia, which began today. The weather was calm and sunny. Australia won the toss and batted. The Sussex team is: A. J. Holmes, R. G. Stainton, John Langridge J. H. Parks, James Langridge, R. Bartlett, O. Cox, H. E. Hammond, W. Cornford, D. J. Wood, J. Cornford. The Australians started quietly. C. W. Walker was at the crease 35 minutes. C. L. Badcock failed to get over a ball from the medium pace lefthander, Wood, and was caught in the gully. Hassett found the wicket to his liking and drove and pulled stylishly. S. J. McCabe fell cheaply. He has often fallen lately through apparent carelessness or staleness.

The morning’s play was languorous. Hassett and Brown continued after lunch, then, after a stay of 115 minutes, Hassett touched a ball from Hammond and it trickled on to his off stump and just dislodged a bail. Brown continued soundly. He spent half an hour getting four runs and his 50 was completed in two hours. He was a model of stroke production, if not of enterprise. M. G. Waite was not altogether comfortable, but played occasional good strokes.

Brown scored more briskly after tea, till an excellent ball from Wood took the top off a stump. He batted for 160 minutes and hit two fours. Stainton and John Langridge scored quickly and played out time although four bowlers were tried. They were especially confident against E. L. McCormick. Scores:—
