RAILWAY WORKERS’ HOUSES
CONSTRUCTION WORK IN SOUTHLAND Satisfactory progress is being made with the construction of railway staff dwelling-houses in the Southland district. Additional houses have just been completed at Stirling, Clinton and Waipahi, and work has begun on more dwellings at Edendale and Winton. Staff increases at Lumsden, due to that station’s improved status as a road-ser-vice terminal, will necessitate six new houses there, and a start has been made on the erection of these by urivate contract.
In the Otago district, where the construction programme provides for 41 houses divided among 25 towns, work is proceeding steadily, urgent needs being given priority in every case. Grade easement works have been begun at Clarendon, 30 miles south of Dunedin, on the main Invercargill line. At present there are 43 men employed, but the complement will be 100 men when the work is in full operation.
