DEATH-ROLL OF 16 IN JAFFA

BOMB EXPLOSION, SNIPING AND STONING (Received August 27, 6.30 p.m.) ' LONDON, August 26. It is officially stated in Jerusalem that 16 persons were killed and 30 injured in Jaffa by a bomb explosion yesterday ' and subsequent sniping, stoning and arson. The police fired on Arabs attacking police stations and banks. Troops are checking looting at Jaffa and Tel Aviv. The fire brigades are fighting a series of outbreaks. Shops and banks are closed.

The situation is reported to be easing.

Further advice states that a passenger train was partially derailed yesterday on the Tel-Aviv line near Lydda. There were no casualties, but traffic is still suspended by the damage. A daylight curfew was imposed at Jaffa at noon today, after which the situation improved.

The Palestine Partition Commission heard evidence in private from Sir Arthur Wauchope (the former High Commissioner) and Mr Colin Baly, assistant director of the Colt archaeological expedition. Today 120 new recruits for the Palestine police force left London. Another 2301 are expected to leave before the end of September. Early in September an ixifantry brigade to reinforce the garrison in Palestine will leave England.
