YOUTH DROWNED IN RIVER

DRAY CAPSIZES IN DEEP WATER (United Press Association) HOKITIKA, August 27. James Thomas Victor Cooper, aged 19, after delivering a load of coal across the river attempted to cross the main stream of the Hokitika river instead of going round by road and bridge and found the water too deep. He attempted to turn back when the dray capsized and Cooper was thrown out and drowned. The horse was also drowned in 20ft of water. Cooper’s body has not yet been recovered.

SEAMAN INJURED IN . FALL ON SHIP MAUI POMARE HASTENS TO LYTTELTON (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, August 28. Although she previously advised that she would arrive at Lyttelton at daybreak on Monday, the Government motor-ship Maui Pomare berthed at 9.30 p.m. tonight, her speed haying been increased because a member of the crew, after an accident, needed medical attention. The injured man was Steward L. Silvester, who lost his hold and fell down a companionway on Friday. He was attended on his arrival at Lyttelton by the port health officer, Dr C. H. Upham, who .found him to be suffering from severe bruises and strain to his back and sides. He will be sent to the Christchurch hospital tomorrow morning for an Xray examination. The Maui Pomare had a rough trip on the latter part of the voyage, with very heavy seas.

MIRACULOUS ESCAPE

TRUCK HURTLES DOWN HILL WHEN ROAD COLLAPSES

NELSON, August 28.

Two men had a miraculous escape from serious injury on Saturday afternoon when a truck fell 150 feet down a steep hillside near Hope. The truck was bringing a load of wood from Aniseed Valley, and at the top of the hill pulled aside to let a car pass. Suddenly the road gave way under the strain and the truck toppled over the brink. It somersaulted at least a dozen times before reaching the bottom. The passengers in the cab, Robert Freeman, of Hope, and a man named McDowell, were thrown clear when the cab was smashed to matchwood half way down. Freeman suffered from shock, scratches and bruises, and was taken to hospital, but his condition is not serious. McDowell was only slightly cut. The truck was wrecked. TRUCK CRASHES INTO TELEGRAPH POLE

DRIVER THROWN ON TO SIDE OF ROAD (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 28. Concussion, abrasions, an injury to his back and a possible fracture of the ribs were suffered by a bushman, John Edward Turnwald, aged 44, a married man of Waitakere, when a truck he was driving crashed into a telegraph pole on Saturday afternoon. The driver was thrown on to the side of the road about 30 feet from the truck. The accident occurred outside- the mental hospital on the Great North road. Turnwald was driving alone at the time, and it is thought that the truck skidded on the wet concrete and struck the pole. A taxi driver arrived on the scene and found Turnwald lying unconscious with his head on the kerbing. PEDESTRIAN KILLED

(United Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 28. A fatal accident occurred on the Hutt road at 7 o’clock on Saturday night,

a pedestrian being knocked down by a motor-car and killed. The victim of the accident was a carpenter named Neilsen, about 50 years of age, a single man residing at 78 Cuba street, Petone. He received severe head injuries. Neilsen, who was a native of Finland, was endeavouring to cross the Hutt road just north of the new overhead bridge between Kaiwarra and Thomdon. He was proceeding towards Wellington when a car going in the same direction struck him. He was dead when picked up. OLD MAN DROWNED IN SURF (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 27. Caught by the incoming surf while carting shingle on the beach at Ohiro Bay, Wellington, yesterday Harry Perrett, a married man, aged 68, was swept into the sea and drowned. His companion, a boy, managed to escape by climbing* on to the rocks. The point at which the accident occurred is passable only at low tide. * Perrett had been carting metal from the place with a three-horse dray and he was about to drive out with the last load when a heavy sea swept up the beach toward the cliff under which he was working, overturned the dray and swept it out to sea. Perrett was drowned as were the three horses. His body has been recovered. FOOTBALLER INJURED CHRISTCHURCH

(United Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 28. Fractured ribs and shock were suffered by Tui Alfred Adams, aged 17, as the result of a kick while he was playing football on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to the Auckland hospital where an operation was performed. MAN THROWN FROM VAN After being thrown from the back of a motor-van on to the bitumen in front of the Gore railway station on Saturdav evening, Hugh Telfer, of McNab, was knocked down by a motorcycle. The motor-van had been proceeding south about 10 o clock and it turned sharply south of the railway station, Telfer, who had been sitting in the rear of the vehicle being thrown on to the street. He was dazed by the fall and just as he was getting to his feet he was knocked down by a motorcycle, ridden by Charles W. McDonald, of Heriot. Telfer was admitted to the Gore hospital, suffering from abrasions to his head and left hand, and a fractured left arm. His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
