FIVE MEN KILLED BY GAS IN PIT (Received August 11, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, August 11. The story of workers’ fruitless heroism was revealed at Wellingborough, where two men who were cleaning out a pit at Tanuary were overcome by gas. Another man climbed down to rescue them and collapsed; two others followed and were also overcome; and another two who descended with ropes attached were pulled out in a state of collapse. A police sergeant arrived with a respirator. He was lowered into the pit and brought out the five men, all dead.
