WINTON
SCHOOL CONCERT SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION IN THEATRE ROYAL There was a big attendance at a concert in the Theatre Royal given by the pupils of the Winton District High School. The profits will benefit the school funds by over £3O. Selections were played by the Winton Band outside the theatre before the concert started and a Winton orchestra comprising Miss M. McKenzie (piano), Misses M. Bennett and B. Taylor and Mr S. Smith (violins), Mr H. Hammond (piccolo), Mr S. M. Allott (’cello) and Mr 'N. Young (effects) played the music for the concert. All the items were' well received and the programme was as follows:— “Overture,” Winton orchestra; “The Shepherd’s Song,” “Slumber Song,” (school choir); “The Old Oak Tree” infants; “Physical Culture Display,” girls; “On Wings of Song,” “Fairy Glade,” “Aloha Oe,” songs by forms 1 and 2; “Japanese Fan Dance,” infants; “Sylvia,” “Hark, Hark, the Lark,” High School girls; “The Doctor’s Dilemma,” play by pupils; “Play Day in Holland,” operetta by Standard 1; “Scene from Shakespeare,” senior boys; “Maori Melodies,” standards 2, 3 and 4; “Farewell to Visitor,” song by senior girls; “Drill Display” boys “Bill the Burglar,” farce by-standards 3 and 4; “Norweigan Mountain March,” folk dance by. standards 3 and 4 girls; “The Crimson Coco-nut;” comedy play by High School pupils; “Tap Dance,” senior girls; “Pampelstilskin,” play by forms 1 and 2; “Winton School Song” school choir. At the end of the concert Mr John H. Thomson, chairman of the School Committee thanked the audience for its attendance on such a wet night. BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS Over 100 members of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs in the Winton district assembled at the Winton school for the presentation of awards won during last season. The Provincial Committee was represented by the president, Mr B. P. Mansfield, the vice-president, Mr J. C. Gardner and the organizing secretary, Mr K. I. Robertson, and members of about 10 Central District schools were included in the audience.
After the merit and special merit certificates had been distributed, John Nelson, of Dipton, was presented with a medal as the member with, the best Jersey calf. The president, in pointing out the fine work being done by club members throughout New Zealand, urged all present to strive to make the coming season even more successful than last.
Awards were then made by Mr Gardner to the Remnant brothers, of Lochiel, whose work with their ponies he described as phenomenal, and to Hazel Kelly, of Dunearn, in the pony class, and Donald McEachern, of Hedgehope, for his calf. Altogether 60 awards were presented. The second part of the evening was taken up by Mr E. T. Thomas, of Invercargill, who provided a picture programme, depicting humour, travel, nature study or some phase of industry. A vote of thanks to the producer was proposed by Mr G. P. Martin, of Dipton, who pointed put the educational value of the subjects they had just witnessed.
The next activity arranged for the Central District is a series of demonstrations for the five groups, to be held about the end of September.
