OBITUARY
MR C. A. LA ROCHE The death occurred recently in Oamaru of Mr Charles Augustus La Roche, aged 72. He was formerly engineer and secretary of the Oamaru Harbour Board, retiring from that posi- | tion at the end of 1929. Mr La Roche was born at Auckland, and received his education at the Auckland Grammar School. He joined the staff of the Auckland Harbour Board as an engineer cadet, and was assistant engineer to the board for 15 years and engineer for one year. He was in the employ of the Auckland board for 22 years. He joined the Oamaru Harbour Board as engineer and secretary in 1908, serving the board for 21 years. It was during his term that the Holmes wharf was lengthened from 500 feet to 700 feet, and then again to 900 feet just before his retirement. The Progress, brought out in pieces and built at Port Chalmers as a bucket dredge for the Oamaru Harbour Board, was altered during Mr La Roche’s term of office to a pumping dredge, by which the reclamation on which the tennis courts now stand was made. Mr La Roche in his younger days was an enthusiastic bowler, and was secretary of the Phoenix Bowling Club. He was a Past Master of Lodge Remuera, secretary of Lodge .Waitaki, and a member of the Oamaru Jockey and Trotting Clubs, and of the committee of the North Otago Club. Mr La Roche leaves his wife, a son, Mr C. La Roche, of Dunedin, and o a daughter, Miss Elsie La Roche, of Oamaru. MRS WALTER P. CHRYSLER (Received August 9, 10.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 8.
