POSSIBLE RESOURCES OF ANTARCTIC
COAL MINES IN ARCTIC AS PRECEDENT SYDNEY, July 9. Sir Douglas Mawson, discounting Mr R. B. O’Brien’s statement about the commercial value of the Antarctic, said that provided reasonably rich mineral deposits were discovered in the Antarctic there was nothing to stop them from being profitably worked. Sir Douglas pointed out that coal mining was in active progress in Spitzbergen and active mining had been conducted for nearly 100 years in Greenland. Mr O’Brien, a member of Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd’s second expedition to the Antarctic, is now visiting Sydney from New Zealand. He said that for various reasons any commercial exploitation of the gold, coal and other mineral deposits in the ice area was impossible. Mr O’Brien was referring to the proposal by the Federal Government to consult with the British and other Governments to see whether any purpose could be served by an organized expedition.
