REFERRED BACK TO COUNCIL

RIVERTON APPLICATION FOR LOAN

The Riverton Borough Council has been advised by the Local Government Loans Board that its application to raise a loan of £5500 for installing a water supply has been referred back to the council for further consideration. The council decided to ask the board to return the plans and specifications so that they could go through them with the district engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr W. G. Pearce, and the engineer engaged by the council. In its letter to the council the board stated that reports indicated that a complete survey and examination of the catchment area and dam site had not been carried out and as a result the plans and specifications submitted were not considered satisfactory. The board suggested that further engineering advice be obtained by the council and that the consulting engineer to be employed for the purpose be required to complete surveys and borings and prepare plans in a manner which would enable the board’s technical advisers to report fully to the board on the scheme as a whole.

At the meeting of the council on Monday night, Cr E. S. Fossey said the district engineer had stated that he could not see his way clear to approve of the plans. He had suggested that new plans and specifications be pre-

pared. Cr Philp remarked that the council would have to pay for what had already been done and then start all over again. The ratepayers might then not agree to the loan.
