LECTURE-RECITAL OF BACH’S MUSIC

INTERESTING PROGRAMME PRESENTED An unexpectedly big attendance at the Bach evening of the music section of the University Association of Southland had a rare treat for Invercargill music lovers last night. It was an organ recital, concert and lecture of merit. In view of Bach’s reputation as the musician’s musician it may be presumed that everyone in Begg’s Hall was under the spell of the father of modern music and technique, but no matter how sincere their admiration for him when they entered the hall, they must have left with an enhanced respect for Handel’s contemporary. Mr Charles Martin’s lecture was an interesting background to the concert programme, which was as follows:— Organ solos, Mr Martin, Prelude '.ndl Fugue in C minor, Prelude and Fugue] in G minor, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, chorale (“Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring”); soprano solo, Mrs P. Frampton, “My Heart Ever Faithful”; bass solos, Mr H. Slater, “Come Ponder O My Soul” and “Lord Almighty, King All Glorious”; piano solo, Mrs Ivon Wilson, Prelude and Fugue No. 29 in D major; violin solos, Mr Cyril Pasco, Air and Gavotte; piano, duet, Miss Ruth Wesney and Mr Martin, Pre-I lude from English Suite.
