Mr James Hargest, M.P., has recovered from the illness he suffered last week and he will leave by the afternoon express today for Wellington Reference to the death of Mr H. E. Lillicrap, a member of the first Southland Rugby football team, in 1887, was made by the president of the Southland Rugby Union (Mr L. R. Lopdell) last evening. A resolution of sympathy with the relations was carried.

Dr F. O. Mac Gibbon left Invercargill on Sunday for Rotorua where he will spend several weeks on a health recruiting holiday. Mr H. S. Barnes, manager of the Wellington branch of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., is retiring because of ill-health. He will be succeeded by Mr C. E. Holmes, of Hamilton.—Press Association.

Captain E. H. W. Rowntree, of Gore, of the First Cadet Battalion of the Southland Regiment, is promoted to the rank of major according to the latest issue of The New Zealand Gazette. Mr C. K. Horne, 8.D.5., youngest son of Mr and Mrs C. P. Home, Invercargill, has been appointed junior dental surgeon at the North Canterbury hospital. He left for Christchurch on Thursday.

Captain H. Shugg, Melbourne, has been appointed chief adjudicator for the New Zealand championship brass bands contest, which is to be held in Christchurch next February.

Mr V. Kirk, Auckland, has been elected president of the New Zealand Accountants and Auditors’ Association.

Members of the staff of the Chief Post Office, Invercargill, met yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr W. Farr, senior telegraphist, who has been transferred to Oamaru. The Chief Postmaster (Mr F. G. Nind), in presenting Mr Farr with a travelling rug, paid a tribute to his capabilities as an officer, and made appreciative reference to the keen interest he took in the social and athletic activities of the office. Other speakers were Messrs F. Cormack, W. H. Walker (telegraph branch), C. N. MacEachen (postal branch), J. M. McKay (clerical branch), G. P. Madden (Money Order and Savings Bank), J. Service (engineering staff) and Miss G. C. McNab (telephone exchange). Mr Farr briefly replied. The bi-annual conference of the Australian and New Zealand Railway Commissioners, which will open in Sydney next Monday, will be attended by Mr G. H. Mackley, general manager of the New Zealand Railways. Mr Mackley left last night for Australia by the Awatea and.will return after the conference, which will last for about a week.—Press Association.
