CRASH HELMETS FOR MOTOR-CYCLISTS
SUGGESTION BY CORONER (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 29. “It is a pity something is not done by organizations to which motorcyclists belong to see that riders wear crash helmets. This is the third or fourth case of a motor-cyclist being killed during the last few weeks. I am satisfied 50 per cent, of young men who have died because of injuries.received when thrown from cycles would be alive today if they had worn helmets that would have given protection to the head.” These remarks were made by Mr F. K. Hunt, Coroner, today when returning a verdict of accidental death caused by a fractured skull at the inquest on Frederick Saker, aged 20, single, of Epsom, who died at Auckland hospital on May 12. The evidence showed that a motorcycle ridden by Saker, with a male friend on the pillion seat, was returning to Auckland from Otahuhu at night time, travelling between 45 and 50 miles an hour. It failed to take a bend, crashed into a stone wall, landed in a swamp and burst into flames. Saker was thrown on to the road. Both young men Were quite sober.
