NEW ZEALAND’S SEED TRADE
REDUCED EXPORTS IN 1937 For the year 1937 New Zealand exported the following quantities of pasture seeds: Red clover, 8053 cwt; white clover, 2492 cwt; other clovers, 456 cwt; brown top, 2283 cwt; Chewings fescue, 13,394 cwt; cocksfoot, 1087 cwt; crested dogstail, 735 cwt; perennial ryegrass, 23,165 cwt; other ryegrass, 204 cwt; other grasses, 211 cwt—total, 58,085 cwt, a decrease of 79,982 cwt on 1936 export figures. The decrease can undoubtedly be attributed to the poor harvest in 1937 with its attendant low yields and high values of seeds. The value in New Zealand currency of the seed exported was £205,698, as against £259,885 for 1936. Of the seed exported the United Kingdom purchased 13,734 cwt, Canada 6073 cwt, United States of America 12,894 cwt, Australia 23,557 cwt, other countries 1827 cwt.
Rape and kale seed imports for 1937 amounted to 15,435 cwt, turnip and
swede 37,164 cwt. This seed was valued at £9276. ' ... 1937 for pastoral work were as follows. Red clover 277 cwt, white clover 4cwt, Alsike 645 cwt, subterranean clover 7513 cwt, other clover 467 cwt, cocksfoot 413 cwt, lucerne 172 cwt, Paspalum 2143 7514 cwt, other 172 cwt, Paspalum 2143 cwt, ryegrass 108 cwt, Timothy 2373 cwt, other ryegrass 1213 cwt —total 15,528 cwt; value £87,904. In 1936 10,689 cwt of the above seed were imported which was valued at £48,737.
