MILKING SHORTHORNS SELL WELL
Keen competition and a widespread demand occurred at the recent series of Milking Shorthorn cattle sales conducted by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited. Buyers were present from all parts of the country, from North Auckland to Canterbury, and the prices realized at auction for the cattle submitted were considered by the vendors to be more than satisfactory. t At the sale conducted on behalf of Mr J. de la Haye, Woodville, the average price realized for cows was 21} guineas; heifers 19 guineas and bulls .21 guineas. The top price for the day was 50 guineas paid by Messrs George Hall and Sons, Kio Kio, for Terrace View Minnie —a daughter of Matangi Gertrude’s Prince out of Terrace View Strawberry’s Own. Mr W. B. Campion paid 38J guineas for a cow out of Terrace View Minnie by Waimea Senor. The nine-year-old herd sire, Waimea Senor, realized 25 guineas while a more recent purchase from the Waimea stud—Beau Pere —fetched 30 guineas. Not all the cattle submitted in this catalogue were sold at auction as the purchasers’ idea of value, in some cases, was lower than reserves. At the Waimea dispersal sale held at the Levin show grounds, on account of R. V. Brown and Sons, good average prices were realized. Up to 70 guineas was paid for cows and the top price for bulls was 42J guineas. The total clearance of the cattle submitted to a representative bench of buyers realized an average of 22J guineas for cows; 22} guineas for heifers and 22 guineas for bulls. The highest price realized was for the rising two-year-old heifer, Waimea Minga, purchased by Mrs J. Hadeley, Kaiapoi, Canterbury, a daughter of that great show cow and prize winner Waimea Domingo by Birkland Royal Briton, and the bull calf Waimea Vanity’s Lad went to the same purchaser. The next highest price, 44 guineas, was paid by Mr D. K. Buchanan, of Waikanae, for Waimea Vanity, another daughter of Waimea Domingo. Mr R. Hooper, of Waikanae, also purchased Primrose at 42| guineas, and Mr L. Barkla, of Hawera, secured Tiki at 33 guineas and Mr John McGowan, of Waiuku, purchased Isobel at 30 guineas.
