• According to Major F. Yeats-Brown, the reminiscences of newspaper men generally give the impression that history is made in the cocktail-bars of the capitals of Europe, instead of only being written there. James Hilton says he dislikes a “style” that employs unusual words with no intention but to startle the reader, send him to a dictionary, or give him the snobbish feeling that, because he cannot properly understand what he is reading, he is improving his mind enormously.
