FREEZING FACILITIES
To The Editor
Sir, —As one who attended the meeting of farmers in Everybody’s Hall on Tuesday, I was amazed at the action of the Farmers’ Union leaders in flouting the wishes of the 800 farmers who signed a petition requesting that another freezing licence be granted to Southland. Evidently the union leaders are more concerned to provide huge dividends for shareholders of freezing companies than to look after the interests of the farmers whom they represent. There is no doubt about the freezing companies overstepping the mark last season. We had a shareholder who tried to throw dust in our eyes by moving that a reduction of 20 per cent, be made in the killing charges. What a death feed repentance on the part of the leaders of the union. I do not know any of them personally, but from what I have seen it seems to me that they are going to wreck the Farmers’ Union. The union is supposed to be non-politi-cal, yet on every opportunity they try to discredit the Labour Government, which, in my honest opinion, is the most humane party that has ever graced the Treasury benches of this fair land. I believe in giving credit where credit is due.—Yours, etc., M. F. LARNER. June 23, 1938.
