OBITUARY

MRS ELLEN LUCKIE

The death has occurred of Mrs Ellen Luckie, an old and highly-respected resident of Queenstown. Until her last illness of a few days the deceased was able to take her usual active interest in her home. Mrs Luckie was a native of Galway, Ireland, and came to New Zealand with her family as a young girl. Her parents, the late Mr and Mrs John Murphy, settled at Fernhills, Southland, and there are many of their descendants in different parts of the province. Soon after her arrival Mrs Luckie was married to Mr Thomas Luckie, of Queenstown, who pre-deceased her by 17 years. Mr Luckie was a ship builder and served his time with a well-known ship-building firm in Dundee, Scotland. He also held a master mariner’s certificate for sailing vessels, having been at sea for many years. Later, on coming to New Zealand, he became a contractor, bridge and dredge builder in the Wakatipu district. Surviving Mrs Luckie are two sons, Captain T. R. Luckie (Queenstown), and Mr J. W. Luckie (Wellington). Her daughters are Mrs A. W. McLean (Garston), Mrs J. W. O’Brien (Otautau), and Misses A. and M. Luckie (Queenstown)., Her two eldest daughters pre-deceased her. There are 16 grand-children and one great-grand-child.
