The Social Round
Mrs James Begg, Dominion president of the Plunket Society, has returned to Dunedin from a short visit to Wellington. Miss Emma Louise Phillips, of America, has arrived in Dunedin to take up a position on the staff of the Home Science School. Miss Phillips gained the degree of M.Sc. at the College of Industrial Arts, Denton, Texas, studying under Miss McGill, a former principal of the clothing department of the Otago Home Science School. The only woman in the United States doing work for which few women are equipped is Miss Helen Bullard, who sketches trees and plans gardens. At present Miss Bullard is designing the landscape for the New York World’s Fair in 1939. A country woman, her home is the little town of Schuylerville, in New York state.
Mrs J. W. Paton, Bluff road, Kew, was hostess at a linen afternoon in the Brown Owl in honour of Miss Annie Somerville, who is to be married next week. Those present were Mesdames J.
Dale, A. Gray, J. Somerville, M. Simpson, J. Wyatt, M. Mclvor, Wyatt, sen.; Misses L. Wood, C. Haberfield, N. Gardner, V. and M. Dale, R. Wyatt, Z. Nicholson, P. Gray and O. Paton. Lady Hart-Dyke has a special stall at the Glasgow Exhibition _to demonstrate the progress she is making with her silkworm hobby. Her farm at Lullingstone is a pleasant, place of pilgrimage to those who are interested in the silkworm industry. It attracts so many visitors, indeed, that Lady Hart-Dyke is proposing to set up tearooms and a refreshment buffet in the old Tudor barn attached to the estate. The dimensions to which she has developed her hobby may be gauged from the fact, that this year she plans to breed no fewer than two million silkworms.
