In Town And Out

For the Mayor While the Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer, M.P., was discussing the Governments proposals for free medical service last night and mentioning that adequate fees would be paid to doctors . and specialists, a member of the audience interjected: “What about veterinary surgeons’” The query caused much amusement, but the point was completely missed by the speaker who said that if he was unkind he would suggest the interjector should be treated by a veterinary surgeon. It was only at the end of the meeting that the Mayor (Mr John Miller) informed Mr Nordmeyer that tfie interjection had been directed at himself. Mr Nordmeyer enjoyed the joke then as much as the audience had done earlier.

Advertising The Sounds “We are very much behind in advertising to the world anything we have,” said Mr W. J. A. McGregor at a meeting last evening of the Bluff Harbour Board. He made this statement in suggesting that steps should be taken to urge the production, as a tourist guide, of a coloured relief map of the West Coast sounds. “This would be a great advertisement for the sounds,” he added. It was decided that the matter should be brought up by the board’s delegates at the annual conference of the Southland Progress League.

Waiting for Superannuation The Mayor (Mr John Miller) raised a laugh at the opening of the meeting which was addressed by the Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer, M.P., last night. He said Mr Nordmeyer was chairman of the Parliamentary Committee which had considered the national health scheme. “And superannuation,” he said. “That is the biggest part. I am looking forward to that too.”

Harbour Facilities at Bluff The construction of a new shed at Bluff for the Union Steam Ship Company is nearly completed, according to advice deceived last evening at a meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board from the engineer (Mr D. E. S. Mason). “When the Union Company has shifted to its new premises, the renovation of the fish shed, at present occupied by the company, will be begun,” the engineer’s report stated, “in readiness for lease to the Rakiura Fish and Oyster Company.” Manual Training at Gore

Plans for the erection of a manual training centre for the Gore High School were approved at a meeting of the Board of Governors at Gore yesterday afternoon. It was decided to recommend that provision be made for lighting and heating. The building is to be erected on the south-east corner of the hostel ground, and the work will be carried out by the Public Works Department. It is hoped that a start will be made with the construction this term.

Buoy For Fairchild Rock Equipment for a light-and-whistle buoy to mark Fairchild Rock in Foveaux Strait has been ordered in Europe and delivery is expected within seven months. This information was received last evening at a meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board. “We have been agitating for this for years,” said the chairman (Mr W. A. Ott), “and it is very satisfactory to learn that the buoy has actually been ordered.”
