THE WOMEN’S DIVISION

RY AL BUSH BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Ryal Bush branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the president, Mrs Allen, presided over a good attendance. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs and Miss Storey in their bereavement. A gift of baby’s jackets is to qp given to the Victoria Home. Misses M. Davidson and V. Verity were elected to attend the girls’ .-ducational week. A demonstration on hairdressing was given by Mrs Lewis. The results of the competitions were: —Best Bloom: Miss Hamilton 1, Mrs Davidson and Mrs Smellie 2 eq, Miss Storey and Mrs Sheddan 3 eq. Baby’s jacket: Mrs Roxburgh 1, Mrs Storey, Miss Davidson and Mrs Sheddan 2 eq. The hostesses were Mesdames Verity. Gray and Smellie. NIGHTCAPS BRANCH A social evening was held at the meeting of the Nightcaps branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’. Union. The vice-president, Mrs Straith, presided over an attendance of 25 members and friends. The competition for the evening was “Best darned stocking,” which resulted as follows: Miss M. Sinclair 1, Mrs Excell 2, Miss B. Sinclair 3. The roll call was “Suggestions to improve the Women’s Division meetings.” Points in the bloom competition were: Mrs W. Excell 1, Miss Margaret Croad 2, Miss Mary Dodds 3. n A game, “Business Representatives,” was won by Miss Frances Ayton. _ The secretary and retiring president were presented with small gifts. Mrs C. A. Forde, in making the presentation to Mrs Sinclair, said it was largely because of her untiring efforts as president during the past six years that the Nightcaps branch was the. live body it was today. Mrs Sinclair replied. Mrs Sinclair then made a presentation to Mrs Forde who, she said, was entering her fifth year as secretary to the branch. Mrs Forde replied. Miss Taylor presented the guests with bouquets, and they were accorded musical honours. At a meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall the president, Mrs G. Taylor, presided over an attendance of 16 members and friends. A vote of sympathy with Mrs A. J. Brown in the death of an uncle was carried.

The competition for the evening was “Oatmeal cakes.” Mrs C. A. Forde was judge and awarded the prizes as follows: Mrs Sinclair 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Mrs Excell 3. The roll call was “My favourite book and author.” Points in the best bloom competition were: Miss

3. Mrs P. Sinclair was appointed flower steward. ' It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Miss N. Hogan, a member who is an inmate of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Auckland.

A demonstration on daisy mats was given by Miss M. Ayton, Aparima. Some finished specimens were handed round. On the motion of Mrs Straith a vote of thanks was accorded ‘ the demonstrator.

The secretary reported the dressmaking classes had begun in the district and the attendance was satisfactory. Final arrangements were , made for the annual ball to be held in the Coronation Hall, Nightcaps, on June 24. OTAUTAU BRANCH Mrs A. W. Moore (president) presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the monthly meeting of the Otautau branch of the women’s division. It was decided to hold a bring and buy sale in conjunction with the District Nursing Committee on July 29. Miss R. Campbell was appointed treasurer. As Mrs Lokan was unable to be present to give a demonstration, it was decided to ask her to be in attendance at next meeting. ■>.. Miss Muirhead gave an interesting description of her tour in the North Island, and on the motion of Mrs R. James was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follows: Single bloom, Mrs J. Kennedy 1, Miss Reay Campbell 2, Mrs Smellie 3. Vase of small flowers, Mrs Chilton 1, Miss Reay Campbell 2, Mrs J. Kennedy 3. Four oven scones, Mrs J. Muirhead 1, Miss Alys Chilton 2. PYRAMID BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Pyramid branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the schoal. The president (Mrs J. Stewart) opened the meeting. It was decided to donate 10/- towards the travelling expenses of the dressmaking tutor. A report on the meeting of the Southland executive of the W.D.F.U. at Invercargill, was given by the two delegates, Mrs J. Stewart and Miss C. Bruce. » The winner of the best bloom competition for the season was Mrs .J. Qualter, who received a butter dish as a gift from the branch. An instructive address on home nursing was given by Mrs R. White, of Otama. Miss F. White sang two, songs, one being a modern Irish lullaby and the other an American lullaby. The president called on Miss A. Bruce, on behalf of the members, to present a set of green glassware to Mrs N. Windle on the occasion of her recent marriage. In the emblem competition the winners were: Mrs R. White 1, and Mrs J. Stewart 2. Both were presented with gifts donated by Mrs J. Grenville. BROWNS BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Browns branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the president (Mrs H. Anderson), presided over a good attendance. Two new members were welcomed. A very interesting address on South Africa was given by Miss Bellamy. Mrs H. Anderson moved a vote ot thanks and presented Miss Bellamy with a bouquet. Competition results were: Scones, Mrs J. Mac Lean 1, Mrs V. White 2, Miss F. Kerr 3. Best bloom, Mrs J. Buchanan and Miss S. Buchanan (equal) 1, Mrs Hamilton and Miss F. Kerr (equal) 2, Mrs R. Pettigrew 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs V. White and Mrs Paddon. LOCHIEL BRANCH Members of the Lochiel branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers Union held their monthly meeting in the Lochiel hall. Mrs J. W. Irwin presided over a big attendance of meinbers. One new member was welcomed. It was stated that competitions for junior members of the branch had been begun. Mrs A. J. Beck and Mrs D. C. Legat had presented prizes to the section. Mrs J. W. Irwin presented a prize to the member bringing along most members during the year. A mannequin parade was held by the members of the dress-making class. At a previous meeting Mrs G. T. Ledington was met by the members and presented with a leather handbag in recognition of her service to the branch as honorary secretary. A debate between the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Woodlands and Thornbury on “Would an immigration scheme be successful in New Zealand?' was held. The judge’s decision went to the Woodlands team, which took the negative. „ Supper was served to about iw friends and members by the members of the branch and young farmers. Competition results were:—Four pikelets, Mrs Forbes 1, Mrs Le&ngton 2, Mrs Clausen 3. Best bloom: Mrs Evans. GROVE BUSH BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Grove. Bush branch of the Womens Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs Coveneyl presided over a good attendance The roll call was “A good riddle or, humorous story.” During the afternoon a mannequin parade was held and a selection of finished articles was displayed. ine members of the dress-making class who took part were Misses J. and M. Coveney, D. Duggan, K. Bragg and M. Warden and the garments exhibited included frocks, coate, costumes and evening frocks and coatees. Mrs W. .Horman played the piano. The results of the competitions for the meeting were.—Something new from something old: Mrs Coveney 1, Mrs Warden 2, Mrs Boniface and Mrs Walsh 3 eq. Grape fruit marmalade: Mrs Walsh 1, Mrs Paulin 2, Mrs Boniface and Miss Jean Coveney 3 eq. Best bloom: Mrs Coveney 1, Miss Jean Coveney 2, Miss D. Duggan 3. Two junior members, Misses Jean Coveney and Mavis Warden, were selected to attend the girls educational week in Invercargill. OTERAMIKA BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Oteramika branch of the Womens Division of the Farmers’ Union was well attended, Mrs King presiding. The president suggested that tne branch should present a trophy to the Waituna school to be competed for annually, for some outdoor pursuit, subject to the teacher’s and committees approval. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr, Clearwater for his present. It was decided to hold the birthday concert early in August. The June competition resulted:— Knitting: Mrs Perriam 1, Mrs Iremonger 2. Flowers: Mrs Iremonger 1, Mrs King 2.
