HUNTING CHORUS UNDER OFFER

“Frivolous Protest”

About Dates

MERRY SIMON IN NEW QUARTERS

Nominations for the Grand National meeting close on Friday next Leading Horseman When L. J. Ellis scored on Potent at Greymouth on Saturday it was the first winner he had ridden since May 14. Better Terms Settlement gave Valantua 41b and beat him at Wingatui but at Ashburton next Saturday the difference is 91b. Under Offer Hunting Chorus, winner of the Trial Handicap at the recent Dunedin meeting, is under offer to an Ashburton sportsman and is engaged at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. In New Quarters Mrs C. Bain has disposed of the two-year-old, Merry Simon (Gascony-Lady Makere) to a patron of P. J. Kbyle’s stable and in future he will be worked as a member of that trainer’s team. £9OOO In Fines During the first five months of the present year starting-price bookmakers in Perth paid fines totalling £9OOO. Birchwood Hunt A meeting will be held in Invercargill this evening to form an Invercargill branch of the Birchwood Hunt Club. Schooling Well Sir Rosenor, who was recently purchased at Wingatui by a patron of S. Barr’s stable, has been schooling well at Riccarton. Cost Only 10 Guineas Scrap, winner of the hurdle race at Wingatui last Saturday, was purchased by Miss Nichols for lOgns at the 1933 national yearling sales, and then turned out until he was a five-year-old to develop. Being Spelled Turaki has been sent home to his owner’s property at Waimatuku and will not be produced again until the spring. The Balboa-Divinial three-year-old shaped well enough to suggest that he will win races in another season and is just the type to win over a middle distance. Mr W. J. McLaren also has Fairform (dam of Charmaine, Rin Tin Tin and Tauramai) with a filly foal by Pink Coat running at his property at Waimatuku. Next Appearance Nightcalm may make his next appearance at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting. It is not intended to race him very extensively during the early part of the incoming season, but to tune him up with the possibility of a visit to Australia in the autumn. Remounts The remount encouragement scheme will be discussed in Christchurch shortly, the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association having convened a meeting of the bodies in Canterbury that are interested, including racing and hunt clubs. The Canterbury Jockey Club will be represented by Mr G. Gould and the Banks Peninsula Racing Club by Mr R. M. Morten. “Frivolous Protest” At a meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club Committee, an objection was received from the Southland Racing Club in reference to the club’s application for January 3 for its New Year meeting, states a special message to The Southland Times. Strong criticism was made by the committee on receipt of the objection, and it was decided to forward a telegram to the Racing Conference strongly protesting against the reappearance of Southland’s “frivolous protest” about the New Year date for the seventh time in succession. The secretary (Mr D. V. G. Smith) was appointed to appear before the executive committee of the Racing Conference in Wellington, on behalf of the club, and in support of its application for the date objected to by the Southland club. Well Advertised When the Aga Khan sold Bahram to an American syndicate it was thought he had made a great mistake. He may have done, but in Dastur (SolarioFriar’s Daughter) he has a sire vl.ose progeny are showing exceptional speed. Already this season Dastur has been represented by four of the best two-year-olds—Dhoti, Vasamour, Veracite and Dasaratha, the last-mentioned three being fillies. As Bahram is by Blandford from Friar’s Daughter, his American purchasers now have good cause for being optimistic as to his stud prospects. Melbourne Cup Entries New Zealand horses entered for the Melbourne Cup, additional to Catalogue, Sly Fox and Amigo, are Ceme Abbas, Royal Chief, Flood Tide, Cheval de Volee, Dictate, Jack Tar, Queen of Song, Stretto and Willie Win. Most of these horses have also been nominated for the Caulfield Cup. Other horses of New Zealand interest in the Melbourne Cup are the Dominion-bred Mala, First Consul, Footmark, Golden Treasure, Lynch Law, Limulet, Mananui, Sports Coat, Sir Regent, Troy, Beau Frere, Dannevirke, Elanage, International, Pantoon and Royal Order. The most notable omission is Wotan, who won the race in record time two years ago. Last year's winner, The Trump is among the entries. A Gift Of all the victories scored during the winter carnival at Ellerslie not one would give an owner more pleasure than that of Mai de Mer, who took the first division of the Jervois Handicap on the opening day. While at Takanini one afternoon looking over the stables of R. Miller, the Hon. F. E. Lark took a fancy to Mai de Mer then owned by Mr Desmond Davis and a stablemate to Floodtide. Mr Lark expressed the opinion that Mai de Mer would be a useful horse and the upshot was that Mr Davis leased the horse to Mr Lark or rather to Mrs Lark. But Mai de Mer did not make good as early as anticipated, and one day Mr Davis remarked that die chestnut must have been costii.j a good bit of money in training fees and other expenses, and decided to cancel the lease and make a present of the horse to Mrs Lark. Possibly Mai de Mer was a trifle lucky to beat Vaalso in his success, but, even so (says an exchange) the winner ran a fine race and can be expected to improve. Next season he may be a useful handicap horse.
