SKENE CUP PRESENTED TO OTAMA SCHOOL

IMPROVEMENT IN ENVIRONMENT Mr S. Rice (chairman), Mr Hugh Smith (member) and Mr J. J. Gough (architect) of the Southland Education Board, visited the Otama School to present the Skene Cup. This cup is for annual competition and is awarded to the sole charge school in Southland showing the most improvement in the school environment during any one year. Mr Smith, in presenting the cup, spoke of the importance of always being neat and tidy and expressed the hope that when the pupils grew up they would carry on the example set them at school. Mr Rice endorsed Mr Smith’s remarks and said he would present another cup which would be retained by Otama as a permanent memento of an 'excellent year’s achievement. He congratulated the school committee on the great interest it had shown and extended his warm appreciation of its work.

Mr Mackay, the chairman of the committee, replied, and said that the success of the school was undoubtedly due to the splendid co-operation existing between the school teacher and committee and between the school and district. He outlined improvements that were to be undertaken in the near future and stated that the committee’s policy was to make the school, internally and externally, a congenial and uplifting place for the school children.
