ROAD ROUND HILL AT BLUFF
GOVERNMENT ASKED TO MAKE SURVEY BENEFITS TO SOUTHLAND QUOTED A suggestion that a road encircling Bluff Hill, beginning at Stirling Point and ending at Ocean Beach, should be constructed was made at a meeting of the Bluff Progressive League by Mr J. H. Doyle. Mr Doyle said that such a road would be of great benefit, not only to Bluff, but to the people of Invercargill and Southland generally, for it would provide a splendid scenic drive for city dwellers and would be an attraction for visitors to Southland. It was decided that the suggestion be embodied in a remit to the annual meeting of the Southland Progress League, asking the Government to make a survey and an estimate of the cost of the project. “The main road ends at present at Stirling Point," said Mr Doyle. “A motorist can see very little of the excellent view that would be afforded if he could drive right round the coast to Ocean Beach. The road could be a one-way road, eliminating any possibility of danger. Motorists could enter the port by the main road and leave by the proposed new route. The project would not be unduly expensive and the benefit would warrant the expenditure." “We have been too modest at Bluff,” said Mr O. F. Metzger. “It is a project worth battling for. It would be of great benefit to the people of Southland arid lhe drive would be more pleasant than a trip to Oreti Beach. The view of the sea, with Stewart Island in the background, is really excellent.” It was decided to forward the following remit to the Southland Progress League:— That the Government be asked to survey and prepare an estimated cost of a road from the Stirling Point pilot station round the Bluff Hill to Ocean Beach.
