MR COATES COMPARES HIS OWN TREATMENT “GOVERNMENT SENSITIVE TO CRITICISM” . (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 19. A suggestion that the Government was uncommonly sensitive to criticism was made by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, M.P. for Kaipara, addressing his constituents at Warkworth. ... “Labour members complain bitterly about the Press,” he said. “In my experience I have never known a Government to receive from the Press of New Zealand the generous treatment that has been accorded > the Labour Government. I have been in active politics longer than any present Minister and can say quite definitely that not one of them has had nearly as much criticism as I have had directed at me.” Referring to concessions made to newspapers for telegraphic rates, Mr Coates said the rates in New Zealand were considerably higher than in England. “The newspapers have every right to distinguish between propaganda and news,” he said. “It is for the express public opinion as it sees it.”
