SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTION
United Party’s Good Lead WOMEN OUTNUMBER MEN IN HEAVY POLL (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received May 19, 11.30 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, May 19. The counting of votes in the urban areas has been completed, the state of the parties being: United 51 Nationalist 0 Dominion 6 Labour 3 Independents 1 Counting in the rural areas is now in progress. It is expected that when the counting has concluded the United Party, which holds the Government benches, will have more than 90 seats. A feature of the voting has been the heavy and consistent poll of the women, who outnumbered the men. The campaign was comparatively quiet until last night, when the outside districts on the Rand were given
over to hooliganism, all cars belonging to Jews being smashed. The police cleared .the streets in the poorer class district. Nearly 1,000,000 persons were expected to poll in the South African general election. Four members—all United Party (Government) —were unopposed, leaving 354 candidates for 146 sets, all of which the United Party contested. The' Leader of the United Party (General J. B. M. Hertzog) in a joint manifesto with General Jan Smuts declared his intention of maintaining friendship with fellow-members of the Empire. , The principal opposition consists of the Republican Party—the self-styled purified nationalists—with 104 candidates, led by Dr Daniel Malan. This party aims at the establishment of an independent republic and has a certain sqptlmental sway, but the campaign has rekindled some of the old racial bitterness. - t Other opposition forces are the Dominion Party (33 candidates), which appeals exclusively to the British element; the Labour Barty (36 candidates); and the zlndependents (35 candidates). It was expected that the Government would lose some seats but it was assured of a substantial majority. The state of the parties at the dissolution of Parliament was: Government 117 Republicans 20 Dominion 5 Labour 4 Independents 4
