Mr M. C. Rice was appointed town clerk of Wyndham at a meeting of the Town Board. There were three applicants for the position. Mr Rice will take up his duties on June 1. The resignation of Mr W. F. Haworth from the staff of the Southland Boys’ High School because of an appointment to a position at the Papanui Technical High School, was received at a meeting of the High School’s Board of Governors yesterday. Mr G. H. Geddes, M.A., who is at present teaching in the Otago district and is well known in athletic circles, was appointed to the position vacated by Mr Haworth. A welcome to Mr- A. Wachner as the representative of the Invercargill City Council on the council of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, was extended by the president of the chamber (Mr W. Grieve) at the meeting of the council yesterday afternoon. Mr Grieve also congratulated Mr C. B. Tapley and Mr W. A. Ott on their election to the Bluff Harbour Board and Mr A. McKenzie on his election to the Southland Hospital Board. Mr Thomas Hickey, of Edendale, has been appointed to the main committee of the Southland War Funds Association in place of Mr H. S. Raines, whose death occurred recently. Mr W. G. V. Fernie, of Christchurch, general manager, of the Calder Mackay Company, Ltd., who has been on a visit to Invercargill, will leave by the express this morning. At the conclusion of the meeting of the executive of the Southland Progress League last night Dr J. A. Pottinger congratulated the president (Mr John Miller) on his return to the mayoralty, and expressed his appreciation of his services on the league. Mr A. S. Russell endorsed Dr Pottinger’s remarks and the Mayor in reply expressed his appreciation of the co-operation given him by members of the executive.

Reference to the loss suffered by the Southland War Funds Association through the death of Mr H. S. Raines, who had been a member of the committee for some years, was made at the annual meeting by the president, Mr J. A. Stirling. The usual motion of sympathy was passed.
