HARMONY, SONG AND HUMOUR
COMMUNITY SING IN CIVIC THEATRE HIGH STANDARD OF ENTERTAINMENT Humour, song and harmony, the three characteristics of the weekly community sings in Invercargill in aid of the Mayor’s relief fund and the Plunket Society, were prominently featured at last night’s sing in the Civic Theatre. The leaders, Messrs Charles Trim and P. Linton Hodge, assisted, at the piano by Mr Howard Moody, maintained a high standard of brisk comedy and, in addition to the general singing, there was also an excellent concert programme. The attendance was good. The Civic Band was present and contributed several items. Another popular feature was the attractive programme contributed by Miss K. Derbie’s pupils. An instrumental duo was contributed by Bandsmen Wills and Storrie, and a mouth organ solo by Mr Rutherford and a monologue by Mr Howard Moody were among the individual items. The audience was put in a good humour from the beginning by the entrance of the leaders singing “Santa Claus” and from that moment the singing went with a zest which contributed in a large measure to the success of the auction of goods which took place halfway through the programme. The programme was as follows:— Overture, Civic Band; leaders enter and sing “Santa Claus”; “God Defend New Zealand”; “Gentlemen, the King”; “Harbour Lights”; mouth organ solo, Mr Rutherford; Mr Hodge and Mr Trim sing “Little ' Old Lady”; “I Love to Whistle”; “Rose Marie”; Miss Derbie’s pupils; “John Peel”; “Killarney”; “Today I Feel So Happy”; instrumental duet, Bandsmen Wills and Storrie; “Mother Machree”; “Swanee River”; “Song at Twilight”; “John Brown’s Body”, “Wee Deoch and Doris”; “Peggy O’Neill”; Miss Derbie’s pupils; Civic Band; Mr P.
